The United States and Cuba signed an agreement restoring air service between the two countries, US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Transportation Department has invited US airlines to provide scheduled passenger and cargo flights and apply for such service by March 2.

"We are excited to announce the availability of new scheduled air service opportunities to Cuba for US carriers, shippers and the traveling public, and we will conduct this proceeding in a manner designed to maximize public benefits," Foxx stated.

The Transportation Department has invited US airlines to provide scheduled passenger and cargo flights and apply for such service by March 2.

"The new arrangement provides each country with the opportunity to operate up to 20 daily roundtrip flights between the United States and Havana," the statement noted.

Scheduled flights between the United States and Cuba were non-existent for more than 50 years. The new US policy of reengagement is a part of President Barack Obama’s plan to normalize relations with Cuba he announced in late 2014.
