As the United States imposes additional sanctions on Russian individuals under the Magnitsky Act, US Senator John McCain claims that he considers sanctions placed against him by Russia to be a "badge of honor."

On Monday, the US Department of the Treasury announced that it would add five Russian citizens to its sanctions list. Aleksey Anichin, Yevgeni Antonov, Boris Kibis, Pavel Lapshov, and Oleg Urzhumtsev will have US assets frozen, and be barred from traveling to the United States.

Moscow categorized this decision as "another blow to bilateral relations" between the countries, and imposed counter-sanctions on several US individuals.

Speaking to Sputnik, US Senator John McCain claims that he is proud of being placed on the Russian sanctions list.

"They [Russian lawmakers] already sanctioned me. I believe it is a badge of honor," he said on Tuesday, adding that he believed more Russian citizens should be added to the US sanction list.

"I think it is important that we keep sending that message…that if you continue to misbehave, we will continue to impose sanctions," McCain said.

The Magnitsky Act allows the US Treasury to apply sanctions on Russian citizens alleged to be responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky, while he was in pre-trial detention in Moscow. Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who alleged corruption at the highest levels of the Kremlin, died of heart failure while in custody in 2008.

The US list of sanctioned Russian citizens includes 39 individuals.

On the issue of broader economic sanctions against the Russian people, McCain indicated that a number of European nations are looking for a way to end the economic penalties.

"I think there is clearly a lot of conversation amongst the Europeans about lifting the sanctions…There are many countries that are looking for the exit sign," he said. "I have been hearing it for months, that there is enormous pressure in a lot of countries, particularly Germany, to lift the sanctions."

McCain added that the final decision on sanctions relief "to some degree, will depend on American leadership."

The issue will likely be addressed on the sidelines of the upcoming Munich Security Conference.

"It will be in the back-chatter, but it won't be visible," McCain said. "It won't be out in the open in the conference, but there will be a lot of conversations among the Europeans."

The US and its European allies imposed harsh sanctions against Russia following Crimea’s reunification in 2014. While meant to target Russia, the sanctions have had a negative economic blowback on the many European economies who rely on favorable trade relations with Moscow.

McCain is a few years past the actuarial life-expectancy age, so only a short time now until he croaks, and then the US and Russia will FINALLY be able to make peace again.

This clown should be locked up in a padded room in a mental hospital where he can harm nobody else but himself, until he does the rest of us a favor and finally croaks. This moron would be funny if he weren't so dangerous.

He can add his Sanctions Badge of Honor to his silver star, which has equal ranking with Russia's award. I think only half a dozen or so Sanctions Badges of Honor have ever been awarded; but 150,000 silver stars have been dished out from the US PX over the decades.

For the US and Russia to make peace, the schizophrenic Mc Cain must be put to rest by peace loving Americans. Probably he is a self declared war hero and his story created by CIA for a movie. At the least looks like the Vietcongs must have done many experiments on his brain.

I do not know who are sanctioned Russian people, but by reading that their assets in New York will be frozen gives me to think that these people might be some Oligarchs as who else would have assets in New York worth to be frozen Surely ordinary Russian citizen Ivan Ivanovich Mishmash would probably have few thousands of dollars in possible USA bank account. I bet that no matter what US would never froze his account as it would cost more whole circus around freezing his account than it is its value.

So basically if these people are oligarchs than Russia should start with criminal investigation how on Earth Russian citizen have so much money outside Russia and to have look about his taxes. I bet that these people would be found guilty as charged.

If USA is freezing oligarchs assets than they are incredibly stupid as all oligarchs without exception should be their friends as it was during Yeltsin's times. Russia should start to clean own Augeans stables in order to secure its back. Oligarchs are well known fifth colon i Russian society and if they are protected by government that government should answer few very nasty questions and assume criminal responsibility fro supporting criminals.

On other hand I do not understand why Russian government does not want to impose harsh sanctions against EU, USA and Japan by simply banning imports and sale of their automotive industry products. That would be very beneficial for Russian domestic automotive industry and as it is import it would be sourced from other sources rather than from EU, USA and Japan. Imagine that they would lose about 3 billion per month on export to Russia.

That would definitively push EU to the wall as they would suffer the biggest loss of jobs and massive pressure on social security funds for all 2 million workers who would lose their jobs due to these sanctions. Government's heads would roll as marbles and sanctions against Russia would be so short living that it would be laughable.

10 million dollar question is why Russian government does not impose such extremely beneficial sanctions against EU? In my opinion because oligarchs who control imports of automotive products which are personal cars, commercial vehicles, used cars and spare parts, would lose about 1 - 1.5 billion USD in profit. Now we can ask second 10 million dollars question, who is protecting them? The answer on that should give investigation, but I think that there would be nasty, very nasty surprise.

Russian media such as Sputnik or RT should start publicly not just to ask such questions but above all demand clean answer. Russia has no need to suffer these sanctions if they would act intelligently and press the weakest point which is our social security in EU. If people start to feel heath just because rotten and corrupt EU politicians do not have neither courage nor brains to reject American pressure and demands which hurt EU more than USA.
