US lawmakers must pass legislation that aims to modernize the way the federal government tracks and deciphers the social media methods of terror groups and terror suspects, US Senator Charles Schumer said in a statement on Monday.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Schumer urged the Senate lawmakers to pass legislation known as the Combat Terrorist Use of Social Media Act of 2015, which received approval from the House of Representatives on December 16.

"The federal government needs to modernize the way in which it deciphers, disrupts and decodes the social media techniques of terrorist organizations and groups," Schumer stated.

The legislation would enhance the way the Congress and the US administration work together in analyzing and assessing how social media has become the medium of choice for terrorist messaging methods.

"Simply put, the feds need a ‘status update’ when it comes to analyzing Facebook posts and other social media methods of terror groups, and this legislation will get us there."

Last week, a New York man pleaded guilty to using multiple social media sites to recruit for the Islamic State, also known as Daesh, which is a designated terrorist organization outlawed in numerous countries including in Russia. Prosecutors allege the man used 23 different Facebook accounts to seek donations.
