WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In 2013, the Republican-controlled North Carolina legislature, along with Republican Governor Pat McCrory, passed the Voter Information Verification Act (VIVA) that ended same-day voter registration and imposed stricter voter identification laws.
“The change from 2012 to 2014 added more distance for black voters on average, and when you multiply an additional quarter mile by 1.4 million black voters, it shows up as more than300,000 miles,” Hall said on Tuesday.
A new study by the data analysis firm Insightus released show that North Carolina authorities changed the locations of many early voting sites in 2014, making it more difficult for minorities in the state to vote.
“Even a small distance increase or reduction in hours can have a negative impact on voting, so continuous monitoring is important,” Hall noted.
