New York Transit Authority to Remove Ads With Nazi Symbols Amid Backlash

The controversial advertisements containing Nazi insignia that adorned New York City subway cars will be removed, Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) spokesman told Sputnik on Tuesday.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The advertisements went up on November 15 and were supposed to adorn select subway cars for a 30-day-period.

"[Online retailer] Amazon has asked us to pull the wrapped train," the spokesperson said.

Amazon paid for the advertisements to promote the series "The Man in the High Castle," which airs on the company’s Internet streaming service.

The advertising campaign consists of entire subway cars wrapped in vinyl containing Nazi insignia and the flag of Imperial Japan.

Earlier on Tuesday, the MTA announced it would not take down the advertisements because it had "no grounds to reject an ad that does not violate" its standards.

Civil-rights groups have denounced the campaign as exploiting imagery that is deeply offensive to very many people.
