On October 26, the four-year contract between the trade union and GM is expected to expire. The UAW hopes that the sides will reach an agreement raising wages for its members.
“In accordance with the parties’ September 14, 2015 Memorandum of Understanding… and Salaried Master Agreement, this letter shall serve as formal notice provided by the International Union, UAW of the Union’s termination of the aforementioned agreements, to be effective at 11:59 p.m. this Sunday, October 25, 2015,” the letter said on Saturday.
In case, the sides failed to make a deal before the deadline, some 51,000 trade union members could go on strike.
On Thursday, the UAW succeeded to reach the similar agreement with Fiat Chrysler car manufacturer. The union took the case of Fiat Chrysler as a basis for the negotiations with GM.
