Ukrainian national Sergey Vovnenko has been extradited from Italy to the United States to face charges of wire fraud conspiracy and could receive a three-decade prison sentence, as well as a fine if convicted, the US Department of Justice said in a release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Vovnenko is set to be arraigned on October 19 in the US federal court in Newark, New Jersey.

“[Thirty] years in prison and a fine of the greater of $1 million or twice the gain or loss from the offense,” the Justice Department said on Tuesday.

From September 2010 to August 2012, Vovnenko and members of his criminal group hacked into computers and illegally obtained data such as user names and passwords for bank accounts.

“Vovnenko commandeered thousands of computers to create a virtual army of hacked computers that he and his conspirators used to break into other networks and steal valuable information,” US Attorney Paul Fishman said.

US Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy praised the US government of being innovative in prosecuting cyber criminals as shown by its actions in the Vovnenko case.

“This case demonstrates the continued commitment of our cyber investigators and showcases the successful results of partnering with our international law enforcement colleagues,” Clancy said. “Our investigative reach will continue to expand beyond geographical borders despite the perceived anonymity these cybercriminals mistakenly think they enjoy.”
