MOSCOW (Sputnik) – An inmate of Santa Clara County Main Jail in the Californian city of San Jose has died in custody, local media reported, citing police sources.
The man was found in his cell on Monday at 10:30 local time (17:30 GMT), NBC Bay Area said, citing a representative of the county’s sheriff office. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
On August 27, another inmate was found dead in the same jail. A group of three correctional officers was accused for beating him to death. The same officers have also been accused of beating another prisoner, who survived his injuries.
According to the US investigative website Openjustice, during the period 2005-2014 a total of 6,837 inmates died in Californian jails. Some 24 percent of those who died were African-American, however, their share in the state population is about 5.7 percent.
