On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Legislature’s Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture held a hearing on whether the state should implement legislation requiring all foods containing GMOs in Massachusetts to be labeled.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Residents of the US state of Massachusetts support the identification of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food products, advocacy group Center for Food Safety Government Affairs Director Colin O’Neil told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"Yesterday, the people of Massachusetts called on the state legislature to pass H. 3242, a widely popular bill that would require the labeling of GE [genetically engineered] foods sold in the Commonwealth, and would make Massachusetts the fourth state to pass a mandatory GE labeling law," O’Neil said.

O’Neil argued there is no question companies should label their products to alert US citizens about products containing GMOs.

"The question really should be: why American consumers are not given the same fundamental right to know as consumers [are] in 64 countries around the world," O’Neil added.

On Friday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich announced the Russian government has decided not to produce food products that contain GMOs.

The Center for Food Safety is a US non-profit group geared toward protecting human health and the environment by advocating doe organic and sustainable agriculture, according to group’s website.
