MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The main suspect in Friday's fatal shooting of a Texas deputy police officer has been arrested and charged with capital murder, a local sheriff’s office said.
On Friday, a man of dark complexion, identified as Shannon J. Miles, shot dead Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth as he was filling up his patrol car at a gas station in the Houston, Texas area.
"Miles is in the custody of the Harris County Sherriff's Office. We have not been able to extract any details regarding a motive at this point. It appears that Deputy Goforth's killing was unprovoked," Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said during a news conference on Saturday, as quoted by the MSNBC television channel.
Hickman added that there was no evidence indicating the deputy police officer had known Miles.
The United States has seen a rise in gun violence over the past year, with the law enforcement having come under scrutiny over a series of deadly African-American shootings.
