When Johnny Gibson, the cemetery's groundskeeper, arrived at work early Thursday morning, he was shocked by the scene that awaited him, as 124 headstones had been knocked down overnight.
Some of the graves have been there for more than 160 years, with only a few new buried each year, Gibson said. He added that, having worked at the cemetery for 44 years, he hadn't seen vandals touch the graves for decades.
The historic graveyard is often used by locals as a shortcut.
"I don't know who would do it," said Gibson. "Were the people on drugs? Were they drunk? I don't know. But you wouldn't be in your right mind, I don't think, to do something like this."
No message was left behind at the 12-acre cemetery, NBC Philadelphia reported.
