National African American Gun Association founder Philip Smith claims that new US laws to restrict the purchase of firearms would not prevent future shooting deaths.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — New US laws to restrict the purchase of firearms would not prevent future shooting deaths, advocacy group National African American Gun Association founder Philip Smith told Sputnik.

“We can't legislate ourselves out of gun tragedies, that isn't the answer,” Smith said on Monday. “We will always have things like this happening in a society of 300 million people.”

Obama Eulogy: US Blind to Mayhem of Gun Violence
On Thursday, John Houser, 59, opened fire at The Grand Theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana shooting dead two women before killing himself. Seven other victims remain in hospital, one in critical condition. The deadly shooting was the latest in a string that has occurred throughout the United States.

Smith said that despite having voted for President Barack Obama twice, he fundamentally disagrees with Obama on the right to bear firearms.

There “isn’t a magic button” that will get rid of all tragic deaths caused by firearms, the advocate said.

“Even if we had ‘zero tolerance regarding guns’ in the United States, it still wouldn't prevent a few people from getting guns anyway and causing death and destruction of American lives,” Smith explained.

He also said that gun safety laws do damage because they take weapons away from law-abiding citizens who become defenseless without them.

The National African American Gun Association is a network of firearm owners, clubs and outdoors enthusiasts that advocates training African American in the use of firearms for home protection, competitive shooting and outdoor recreational activities, according to the organization’s website.
