WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — “I am here to ask you for your prayers, for your support, for your efforts, because I have decided to run for president of the United States,” Kasich stated at Ohio State University in Columbus.
Kasich has been serving as governor of the US state of Ohio since January 2011. Previously, he was chairman of the US House of Representatives budget committee from January 1995 to January 2001.
Kasich’s announcement adds him to the growing list of nearly a dozen other Republican presidential candidates, pitting him against business mogul Donald Trump and younger brother of a former US president, Jeb Bush, among others. The US presidential election is scheduled for November 8, 2016.
