WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Hussain, who manages CCR’s Guantanamo Global Justice Initiative, joined other protesters in front of the US Justice Department to mark International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, where they called on the agency to investigate CIA personnel accused of torturing detainees.
“We [CCR] will continue our representation of the men detained in Guantanamo and urge President Obama to shut the prison and [end] their torture and suffering,” Hussain said on Friday.
CCR represents a number of Guantanamo detainees, including Majid Khan, who is a victim of CIA torture, and Tariq Ba Odah, who has been detained without charge since 2002, Hussain explained.
The United States likes to tout its human rights record in front of the international community, Hussain argued, but the Senate torture report illustrates how US intelligence agents continually violated domestic and international laws.
In December 2014, the US Senate released a report outlining the use of torture by the CIA. The Agency’s practices against enemy combatants and detainees included waterboarding, questionable medical procedures and other methods that are not defined in the US Army Field Manual.
Besides the rally in Washington, DC, anti-torture protests were also set to take place in New York, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Raleigh in North Carolina and Amherst in Massachusetts, Amnesty International said in a press release earlier on Friday.
Other anti-torture organizations expected to participate included Witness Against Torture, Women For Peace and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, the release added.
