Following a confrontation over vehicle vandalism, a 74-year-old Philadelphia man ended up with two missing fingers and a large cut to his head.

On Saturday at about 6:30 a.m., a 74-year-old man confronted his neighbor, 58, regarding damage done to his vehicle. After the 74-year-old threw a cup of coffee at his neighbor, the neighbor went back into his house and came out with an 18-inch machete.

Police say he swung the machete at the other man severing two fingers from his left hand and leaving a large cut on the side of his head.

Officers arrived to find the machete broken on the ground surrounded by blood. A witness then handed a police officer two severed fingers he said belonged to the victim, who was seen walking toward 13th street with blood pouring from his head. The man reached Methodist Hospital where he was placed in critical condition.

The witness directed officers to home where he said the suspect had entered following the ordeal. Police knocked on the home’s door and the suspect answered covered in blood.

He was transported to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he was treated for cuts to his legs and hands. Criminal charges have not yet been processed and the suspect’s identity has not been released.
