The US Internal Revenue Service is preparing to issue a new batch of indictments in the graft scandal surrounding the world’s football governing body FIFA, the tax authority’s senior official in charge of the investigation said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, the US Justice Department unsealed an indictment charging 14 people – among them nine senior FIFA officials – with racketeering, money laundering and taking some $150 million in bribes and kickbacks.

"I’m fairly confident that we will have another round of indictments," Richard Weber, the head of the IRS unit charged with probing the FIFA corruption scandal, said late Friday as quoted by the New York Times.

According to the US paper, Weber denied allegations that the US Treasury's tax agency was after FIFA’s highest rank.

"We were going after corruption."

The graft investigation is conducted by both the IRS and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), who coordinate their actions with police agencies and diplomats in more than 30 countries, making it one of the most complicated probes in recent history, the daily said.

In addition, Swiss prosecutors launched a separate inquest into the bidding process on the 2018 and 2022 tournaments in Russia and Qatar respectively.
