New York City’s increase in murders amid rising temperatures in the region is a cause for concern, the City Council’s Task Force to Combat Gun Violence Deputy Leader Jumaane Williams said in a statement.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Murders were up 60 percent last week compared to the same seven days in 2014, the NYPD announced on Monday.

“I am deeply concerned that an increase in shootings has occurred across the city, just as temperatures are beginning to rise,” Williams said on Tuesday, referring to the latest New York City Police Department (NYPD) statistics.

Furthermore, eight people were killed between last Friday and Sunday, compared to five people killed during the same period in 2014, according to NYPD statistics.

“As we approach the warm summer months, we cannot accept this as the norm.”

As of May 17, New York City has had 115 homicides in 2015, compared to 102 for the same period in 2014, according to the NYPD.

June 2015 has been named Gun Violence Awareness Month in New York City.
