US House Republicans passed a bill in 2014 to continue funding the Amtrak train service as well as similar programs, making the question of Republicans not funding Amtrak baseless, US House Speaker John Boehner said during his weekly briefing on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday night, Amtrak Northeast regional train 188, carrying 238 passengers and five crew members from Washington, DC to New York City, derailed near Philadelphia. Seven of the 238 passengers are confirmed dead and more than 200 were injured in the accident.

“Are you really going to ask that question?” Boehner said.

“The House passed a bill to reauthorize Amtrak and a lot of these programs last years. There was adequate funding.”

Boehner stated the question of what actually caused the Amtrak train to derail near Philadelphia has nothing to do with Republican funding the Amtrak train service.

"It’s amazing that some people take some of the bait of the nonsense that’s spewed around here [Washington, DC].”

“The train derailed. The train was going twice the speed limit!”

On Wednesday, the US National Transportation Safety Board said the train derailed shortly after the train engineer applied the brakes while going double the speed limit of 50 miles per hour around a curve.
