New Jersey Governor Spent $300,000 of Taxpayers' Money on Food, Alcohol

US state of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on food and alcohol during the first five years he served in office, according to a report by the non-profit Watchdog.org released on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The report detailed the most notable spending took place during the 2010 and 2011 American football seasons at MetLife Stadium, home to the New York football teams Giants and Jets. Christie spent over $80,000 on concession stands at the stadium, according to the report.

"Christie spent $360,000 from his state allowance during his five years in office," the report read. "More than 80 percent of that money was used to buy food, alcohol and desserts."

The purchases were made through Christie’s $95,000 annual allowance, which according to the New Jersey state budget, is in addition to his $175,000 yearly salary.

Christie’s office defended the purchases made through his allowance funds, claiming they were for official business.

"The official nature and business purpose of the event remains the case regardless of whether the event is at the State House, Drumthwacket [New Jersey governor’s official residence] or a sporting event," Christie’s press secretary Kevin Roberts told Watchdog.org.

The report also shows Christie paid over $35,000 for tents and rental equipment, as well at over $4,000 for candy and cookies.

Watchdog.org is a non-profit dedicated to exposing government misdeeds and looking out for taxpayers’ dollars, according to the organization’s website.
