WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States commemorates all soldiers who died during World War II in their fight to bring victory and order and human rights to the world, as well as the victims of the brutal Nazi aggression, US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a press release.

“Out of the war in Europe arose a new commitment to human rights, shared prosperity and peace,” Kerry said on Friday. “There arose, as well, a shared determination to exercise vigilance against any who would abuse power to destroy others and employ violence for political gain.”

Kerry noted “there is no glory inherent in war,” but also stated there is immeasurable honor in the sacrifices made by those who left their homes “to unite and turn back a tide that seemed unstoppable,”

He praise all those who joined the fight from the plains of North America to the heartland of the Soviet Republics, from the United Kingdom and France to Central and Southern Europe and beyond.

Earlier on Friday, US President Barack Obama said the United States remembers the ultimate sacrifice of more than 400,000 Americans who died during World War II, confirming that the United States will continue to stand with its allies in defending liberty and human rights.

More than 40 million people across Europe died in World War II, and at least 27 million of whom were Soviet Union civilian and military casualties.
