Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, is joining the 2016 White House race, the Republican presidential candidate announced in an interview with WKRC-TV, a CBS-affiliated TV station.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – According to WKRC, Carson is expected to make an official statement on his presidential bid on Monday in Detroit.

"I'm willing to be part of the equation and therefore, I'm announcing my candidacy for President of the United States of America," Carson told the Cincinnati (Ohio) television station on Sunday.

"Many people have suggested to me that I should run for president, even though I'm not a politician," Carson told the TV station, adding that he represents "a lot of the same thoughts" that many Americans have.

The retired neurosurgeon believes that the United States is in a highly problematic situation right now, the solution to which does not lie in common politics.

"You must have enough humility to be able to work with others to recognize you're not necessarily the expert in everything. But you can with very good advice, make good decisions," Carson said in the interview with WKRC, adding that he is not "100% sure 'politics as usual' is going to save us."

Born in Detroit in 1951, Ben Carson became the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the head in 1987. He was the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, located in Baltimore, Maryland.

In February 2008, then US President George W. Bush awarded Carson the Ford's Theater Lincoln Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest US civilian honors.

Carson joined the Republican Party on November 4, 2014.

Other Republican contenders in the 2016 presidential race include US Senators Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.

The Democratic candidates include former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has been leading in the polls, as well as Senator Bernie Sanders.
