A 3.9 magnitude earthquake has shaken the Los Angeles area in California, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said Sunday.

Geological experts said the earthquake has occured at 4:07 am local time (11:07 am GMT) Sunday, its epicenter was about 2 miles (3.2 km) from Inglewood and Culver City.

Local residents said on Twitter that the earthquake was light, but the shaking was felt over wide areas.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

In March, the USGS released a study stating that the chances of a catastrophic earthquake hitting California with a magnitude higher than 8 on the Richter scale in the next few decades is becoming more likely.

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit California in late April, according to the USGS. A 6.1 magnitude quake shook Northern California in August 2014, injuring more than 120 people.
