St. George Ribbons Campaign Starts in New York Ahead of Victory Day
02:05 GMT 03.05.2015 (Updated: 06:39 GMT 03.05.2015) Russian Youth of America organization started on Saturday a campaign dedicated to the end of World War II in Europe by handing out St. George Ribbons, a symbol of the Soviet victory, at Times Square, in New York.
NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The campaign began a week before the 70th anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat. The organizers handed out black-and-orange ribbons and brochures, telling about the Victory over Nazism.
On April 22, the annual campaign to hand out St. George Ribbons in the run-up to the May 9 Victory in Europe Day started in Russia and more than 70 other countries.
The campaigners plan to distribute over 20 million ribbons in Russia and abroad by the end of event on May 9.
The campaign was initiated in 2005, and since then it has become a tradition to wear the ribbon ahead of May 9 celebrations in Russia and former Soviet countries.
