On April 19, 1995 the two men, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, detonated a massive truck bomb in front of the Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. The attack killed 168 people, injured almost 700 others, and caused damage worth at least $652 million.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Several hundreds of people have gathered at the former site of the Oklahoma City government building to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the deadliest terror attack in US history prior to the 9/11 tragedy.

Former US President Bill Clinton, who was holding the office at the time of the attack, was also present at the anniversary ceremony.

"There are still people who think they can make a statement by killing innocents," he said in regard to the Islamic State militant groups's atrocities in Iraq and Syria.

Ron Norick, Oklahoma's mayor at the time of the bombing, thanked all the people who had helped the state recover after the tragedy that was "20 years ago, but like yesterday," including law enforcement and medical personnel.

McVeigh, an Army veteran with strong anti-government views, was executed by lethal injection for committing the act of bombing. His accomplice is currently serving life imprisonment with no possibility of parole.
