Just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, a police officer fatally shot a teenage boy in Zion, Illinois, roughly 50 miles north of Chicago.  The investigation is currently under-way, but witnesses say the teen was running from police when they heard a gunshot.

The police were reportedly responding to a call about a fight when one officer spotted what appeared to be a gun in the suspect’s hand.  This lead to a foot-chase where the policemen fired two shots, killing the teen.  He was pronounced dead at Victory Hospital.

Investigators have not identified the officer, nor has the police released the name of the teen. They are not revealing any other details about their investigation, including if any shots were fired by the teen.  Police do, however, say that a handgun was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

Residents of the small suburban town are siding with the teen, saying they believe there was no reason for the police officer to shoot as he was running away at the time.
