MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A disturbing report, claiming that US soldiers sexually abused at least 54 children in Colombia between 2003 and 2007, has been overlooked by all major news outlets in the United States, a media watchdog has said.

The independent report received no coverage from CNN, the New York Times, Huffington Post or any other US media, according to the New York-based Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) media watch group.

Earlier this week, the Colombia Reports website published an article about an 800-page historical analysis of the 50-year-long conflict between the Colombian government and FARC rebels, who are listed as a terrorist organization by Colombia, the United States, the European Union and a number of other countries.

The report mentioned two cases of child abuse by US military personnel, who never faced charges due to diplomatic immunity agreements between Colombia and the United States.

In one such case 53 underage girls were sexually assaulted by US military contractors in the central Colombian town of Melgar in 2004, as the attackers also "filmed [the abuse] and sold the films as pornographic material," according to the report.

The other incident took place in 2007 when a US Army sergeant and a contractor, also stationed in Melgar, sexually abused a 12-year-old girl. The two were flown out of Columbia before prosecutors could take action, the report claimed.

The alarming story has since been picked up by the Venezuela-based TeleSUR television network and by the Russian RT news channel. The British newspaper the Daily Mail also featured the story on their website.

The damning report also concluded that the United States was "directly responsible for the perpetuation of the armed conflict in Colombia" over the past 70 years, adding that the conflict could have ended but for the "United States' military and financial support."
