International Space Station astronaut Terry Virts tweeted an image of his Vulcan hand salute from orbit in tribute to actor Leonard Nimoy who played the iconic Mr. Spock on the original Star Trek series and in subsequent feature films.

On their website, NASA said Nimoy's portrayal of the Enterprise "science officer served as an inspiration to generations of scientists, engineers and sci-fi fans around the world." He also was the narrator of the "In Search of…" series which touched on a number of scientific and pseudo-scientific topics. He was also a poet and children's book author.

Nimoy died on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015.
