MOSCOW, February 1 (Sputnik) — Bad weather will ride roughshod over the US' Midwest and East Coast as of Sunday, with up to 12 inches of snow due to fall along a 1,200-mile swath from Iowa to Massachusetts, forecasters said, according to Reuters.

"Close to 100 million people live within the swath forecast to be hit with accumulating snow or enough wintry mix to make for slippery roads from Saturday evening into Monday," AccuWeather.com forecaster Alex Sosnowski said.

He predicted that heavy snow is expected in the northern part of the Ohio Valley states, the upper mid-Atlantic and southern New England.

As for New York City, it may be damaged by one of the biggest storms on record, Sosnowski warned.

"From near New York City to southern New England, there are still huge piles of snow left. Crews may want to make room for the new snowfall coming," he said.

He was echoed by AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek, who said that "the sooner and more aggressively this happens, the stronger the storm will be and the farther north it will track."

US Midwest residents, for their part, said that they are poised and ready for the coming snowstorm.

"I’m not concerned, I can’t control the weather. We’ll just be prepared for a busy day," Andy Schmitz, a managing partner with a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Sioux City, Iowa, was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Meanwhile, forecasters have warned that motorists from the Midwest to the Northeast should brace themselves for dangerous conditions; a large number of flight delays and cancellations are expected in the coming hours.
