"I unconditionally condemn today's murder of two police officers in New York City. Two brave men won't be going home to their loved ones tonight, and for that, there is no justification," Obama said Saturday.
The US president added that the police officers working for the good of everyone, deserve to be respected and asked people to reject violence.
Obama also called on the US society to pray for the victims and for their friends and family.
On Saturday afternoon, the New York Police Department (NYPD) announced that two uniformed police officers, identified as Wenjian Liu (32) and Rafael Ramos (40), were shot by 28-year old African-American, Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley in their police car.
According to the local media, the killer shot himself at a subway station and died. Earlier on the same day, Brinsley shot his girlfriend and posted anti-police statements on his social media account.
