Ferguson Protests: Event Timeline
MOSCOW, November 25 (Sputnik) – The image of a man standing alone before a row of armored vehicles in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri, has been compared by Twitter users to a well-known photo from China’s Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, USA Today reported Tuesday.

The Ferguson photo depicts a man standing with his hands aloft, as Ferguson’s police prepared for street rallies on Monday after the white police officer Darren Wilson had not been indicted for shooting black teenager Michael Brown in August.

The Ferguson photo resembled a scene from Tiananmen Square in Beijing, when Chinese authorities violently suppressed protests against the country’s political course using rifles and tanks. The photo from that period depicts an unarmed man and four tanks lined up in front of him.

Protests Erupt Across US After Ferguson Grand Jury Decision
According to USA Today, Twitter users drew parallels between the Chinese demonstration as a symbol of the pro-democracy movement and the Ferguson shooting incident, which has triggered a US movement for the civil rights of the African-American population.

Brown’s shooting triggered massive protests against police brutality in Ferguson and around the country, followed by violent clashes between protesters and police officers in Ferguson in August.

The violence erupted again on Monday in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, as the grand jury ruled not to indict Wilson. The court’s decision sparked a wave of protests, as thousands took to the streets, setting buildings on fire and looting stores. Riot police responded with tear gas, batons and flash grenades, with armored cars moving slowly through the area.
