Doctor Salia, a US permanent resident infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone, will be transported to the United States for treatment, according to ABC News.

MOSCOW, November 14 (RIA Novosti) — Dr. Martin Salia, a US permanent resident infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone, will be transported to the United States for treatment, a US government official told ABC News.

Official said on Thursday that Dr. Salia is expected in the United States on November 15 at Nebraska Medical Center.

According to ABC News, a hospital spokesperson said that Salia would be evaluated for possible treatment upon arrival. It remains unclear how he contracted the disease but at the time he was in Sierra Leone, one of the Ebola-stricken countries in West Africa.

The current Ebola epidemic started in southern Guinea in late 2013 and spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal. Since then, Senegal and Nigeria have, however, been declared free of Ebola by the World Health Organization (WHO), with Liberia lifting recently the state of emergency in the country.

There is no officially approved medication for Ebola as of now but several countries, including Russia, are working on trial vaccines and developing drugs that could possibly treat the disease.

According to the WHO data, at least 5,160 people have died from Ebola, while the total number of confirmed, probable and suspected cases has passed 14,000 globally.
