The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) greeted the decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) not to slap Russia with a blanket ban from Rio Olympics after a doping scandal.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The IOC decided last Sunday to leave it up to individual sports associations to decide whether to let Russian athletes compete after claims Russia ran a state-sponsored doping scheme for four years.

"This difficult yet balanced decision acknowledges the failure of the Russian anti-doping system but also supports the rights of clean Russian athletes," ASOIF said in a statement.

ASOIF also said it regretted the way the doping case had been handled by "important voices, both inside and outside the Olympic movement, which have attempted to give priority to media exposure and political influence while disrespecting the existing roles and responsibilities."

Each international federation will have to review its list of qualified Russian athletes to make sure they complied with IOC requirements and agree it with the international sports governing body.
