Germany’s Athletics Association (DLV) chief Clemens Prokop called on the International Olympics Committee (IOC) on Friday to ban Russia from Rio Olympics over doping, in an open letter.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia promised to carry out a clean-up program to fulfill world doping agency WADA’s demands to be allowed to participate in the 2016 Olympics. The international athletics association IAAF will deliver its verdict on whether Russian athletes can participate later in June.

Prokop argued in a letter published on the DLV website that it was too late for doping tests in Russia and Kenya since the enhancing effect of drugs manifests itself during training sessions. For August’s Olympic Games it was in spring 2016.

"If athletes from these countries are allowed to go to Rio, DLV athletes fear that the principle of equality will be violated," the German athletics boss wrote.

Prokop appealed to IOC President Thomas Bachman on behalf of the German athletes to take their concerns seriously and exhaust all possibilities to level the playing field in the Summer Olympic Games.
