ZURICH (Sputnik) — Swiss-Italian football administrator Gianni Infantino, who currently serves as General Secretary of the UEFA, was Friday elected FIFA's new president in the second voting round.
Infantino received 115 votes, well above the 50 percent required to become the new head of the football governing body.
Bahrain's Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation, came in second with 88 votes.
Jordan's Prince Ali bin Hussein followed with four votes, while France's Jerome Champagne received no votes in the second round. South Africa's Tokyo Sexwale withdrew his candidacy from the ballot shortly before voting began.
With Indonesia and Kuwait currently suspended, 207 out of FIFA's 209 members were eligible to vote.
Infantino will not serve a full term, but will assume ousted previous president Joseph Blatter's term, which was to expire in 2019.
