Angelique Kerber stunned the audience at the Australian Open by pulling off a spectacular victory over a number one in women's singles tennis, Serena Williams.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Germany’s Angelique Kerber has defeated six-time champion Serena Williams in three sets on Saturday to win her first major title in the Australian Open final in Melbourne.

Kerber, seeded seventh, beat world number one Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and eight minutes. The win moves the 28-year-old German to the No.2 ranking.

Kerber is now the second German woman in the Open Era to win a major, after Steffi Graf, who won 22 Grand Slam titles.
