MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The disruption by Turkish fans of the minute of silence observed for Paris terror attack victims at a recent match in Istanbul will be addressed by the International Football Association (FIFA), Vitaly Mutko, the Russian sports minister and FIFA executive committee member, said on Wednesday.
"Racism, extremism and violence at stadiums is a global problem. The incident will warrant a serious response by the federation, without a doubt," Mutko told Russian parliamentarians.
Tuesday's incident at Istanbul's Basaksehir stadium, where a number of Turkish fans booed and jeered as the minute of silence was announced, took place before Turkish and Greek national teams engaged in their first game in eight years. Chants of "Allahu Akbar" were heard as others observed the moment of silence.
Periods of silence have been observed at various stadium events across Europe since Friday's terrorist attack left 129 people dead and over 350 injured in Paris. The Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attacks.
