MOSCOW, November 6 (RIA Novosti) – Having scored a double in Barcelona’s 2-0 victory against Ajax, Lionel Messi now shares the Champions League scoring record with Raul, both with 71 goals, the BBC reported.
The Argentine star scored once during the first half, heading the ball into the net after Ajax failed to clear a free kick. Messi’s second goal came in the 76th minute, the BBC said.
With 71 goals scored throughout his entire Champions League career, Messi, along with Raul, is now the league’s leading top scorer. His arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid has 70 goals under his belt, Reuters said.
“I am happy for Leo, for the work he does for the team and because he is number one, the best,” said his teammate Xavi Hernandez, as quoted by Reuters.
Barcelona has nine points after four games in Group F. This guarantees the Spanish club a place in the next round, alongside Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Porto, the BBC said.
