GAZA, November 19 (R-Sport) - Israeli airstrikes have left the Palestine Stadium in the Gaza Strip in ruins as a bombing campaign on the enclave entered its sixth day Monday.
The Israeli Defense Forces said that fighters had been launching rockets at Israel from the 10,000-capacity football stadium.
A series of strikes over the weekend and on Monday morning left four large holes in the pitch and caused major damage to the stands and infrastructure.
“What a stadium it was,” a local resident who gave his name only as Fathi said. “They’ve left nothing at all.”
The stadium was built in the 1990s and hosted many international sporting events before Israeli travel restrictions made that impossible. Palestine’s football team now uses a 7,000-capacity ground in the West Bank.
The Palestine Stadium was also damaged by airstrikes in 2006 before being rebuilt with the help of funds from FIFA, football's world governing body.
The death toll in Gaza climbed to at least 90 on Monday as Israel continued to strike targets in response to a surge in rocket launches from the enclave earlier this month.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said 94 Palestinians, many of them women and children, had been killed since Israel’s military campaign began on November 14.
The Israeli Defense Forces put the figure at 95, with one third of the dead civilians.
Gaza health officials said 25 people have been killed so far on Monday, including three children.
