Zenit St. Petersburg stopper Vyacheslav Malafeev on Tuesday signed a contract extension with the Russian champions through summer 2016, the club announced.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been at the club his entire career, clocking up 441 appearances since breaking into the first team in 1999. He has racked up 153 clean sheets in that time.
Malafeev earned 29 caps for Russia before retiring after Euro 2012 to spend more time with his family. He announced he was quitting after new national team coach Fabio Capello announced Akinfeev would be his No. 1.
Malafeev's clean sheet record of 653 minutes was broken by Akinfeev in Russia's 1-0 win over Azerbaijan earlier this month.
Tragedy hit Malafeev in March 2011, when his wife Marina was killed in a car crash.
He is expected to start Wednesday’s Champions League match against Anderlecht.
