Moscow authorities are banning the sale of alcohol on the territory of the capital's iconic Luzhniki stadium for Sunday's potentially explosive league derby between Spartak and CSKA.

Police are on alert for several Premier League fixtures that could provoke fan trouble, and have taken preventative measures for the most heated clash on the Russian calendar.

"On the territory of Luzhniki, the sale of alcohol, beer, low-alcohol drinks in any bottles, will be prohibited," a police statement said Friday.

The ban will extend to several surrounding transport points including bus and metro stops and is to be enforced from midday to midnight, the statement said.

The match kicks off at 1800 local time (1400GMT).

Police issued a public order reminder on Thursday ahead of the weekend program after last month's Russian Cup match between Dynamo and Torpedo, also a Moscow derby, was called off due to fans throwing firecrackers onto the pitch.

Dozens were arrested in scuffles between fans leading up to that match, leading the authorities to try to calm tensions before they flare up this weekend.

Clubs including Anzhi Makhachkala, who play Dynamo on Sunday, have appealed to their supporters to maintain order.
