Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov and Florida Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov have joined Lokomotiv Yaroslavl for the NHL lockout, the KHL team said Thursday.
A source at Lokomotiv Yaroslavl told R-Sport last week that Varlamov would join his boyhood team imminently.
Varlamov, 24, was at Lokomotiv from the age of 11 and played for two years for the main team before moving to North America in 2008.
“I feel like I’ve never left the team,” Varlamov said in a video interview to Lokomotiv’s website. “Four years have passed like one day.”
“I’m very glad to be back with the team that brought me up, showed me the road to the NHL, opened the doors for me,” he said.
He spent last season in Colorado after three years with the Washington Capitals, making a total of 131 NHL appearances.
Varlamov also won the world championships with the Russian national team in May.
Dmitry Kulikov, 21, played three seasons for the Florida Panthers, appearing in 205 games and recording 13 goals and 58 assists.
The two acquisitions fill the team's quota of three lockout players after Columbus Blue Jackets forward Artem Anisimov, another product of the Lokomotiv youth system, signed up last week.
Lokomotiv spent the past year assembling a team for its return to the KHL after the entire roster was killed in a plane crash that left 44 people dead on the opening day of last season.
