A brace of spectacular goals from Alan Dzagoev and a late volley from Ahmed Musa gave CSKA Moscow a 3-2 comeback win away to FC Volga on Saturday after being 2-0 down at half-time.
The result puts CSKA top of the Russian Premier League, two points above second-placed Terek Grozny, while Volga stay 14th, one place above the relegation zone.
Musa’s winner came with four minutes of normal time remaining as the Nigerian dinked a gentle volley into the net from Keisuke Honda’s cross to claim his third goal of the season.
Earlier, with CSKA 2-0 down, Dzagoev pulled one back on 58 minutes with a stinging long-range shot struck first time off Aleksandrs Cauna’s layoff.
His second came in style on 69 minutes as the Russia midfielder twisted in the air to score with an overhead kick into the bottom corner off Mario Fernandes, seconds after Volga goalkeeper Ilya Abaev had parried a dangerous Zoran Tosic attempt.
Ilya Maximov had opened the scoring for Volga against the run of play on 21 minutes, starting and finishing the move with help of Shota Bibilov, who provided the assist with a through ball for Maximov to shoot past goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.
Alexei Sapogov continued his first Premier League season in style with a fourth goal in as many games, curling a 44th-minute free-kick into Akinfeev’s net to send Volga into half-time with a 2-0 lead.
On Friday, FC Krasnodar thrashed Mordovia Saransk 6-1 in the weekend’s opening fixture.
Saturday also sees Dynamo Moscow host Amkar Perm, before Zenit St. Petersburg travel to Krylya Sovetov and Terek play Lokomotiv Moscow.
On Sunday, Spartak Moscow face FC Rostov and Rubin Kazan play FC Kuban, before Monday’s Caucasus derby between Alania Vladikavkaz and Anzhi ends the round of games.
