Russian ice dancing pair Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev’s free program for the new season sees them play the roles of insane lovers, they told R-Sport on Sunday.
Bobrova and Soloviev are two-time European silver medalists and former world junior champions who are altering their style under new coach Alexander Zhulin and choreographer Sergei Petukhov.
The pair, ranked sixth in the world, make their first appearance at an international tournament this season when they take part in the Finalndia Trophy Espoo in Finland from October 5 through 7.
“At the start of the dance I am, to put it softly, not a healthy person. To be blunt, a madman. I’m sitting in the hospital,” Soloviev said.
“Everything that happens around me is out of my reach. And Katya [Bobrova], my life partner, is trying to prompt me to feel, to instill life in me. The first two minutes on the ice, we’re actually having a conversation about that.”
Bobrova shed more light on the routine.
“I’m frustrated when the first part of the dance is over, I understand that he’s not paying any attention to me at all.”
Soloviev then starts to recover as his lover goes crazy, he added.
Soloviev said that the program is still only “50-50” ready, with significant problems still remaining for the dancers.
Working with Zhulin has meant a dramatic change to the pair’s style, Soloviev said.
“He made the call very quickly that we have to change,” he said.
“We like that a lot too. When this dance is cut up into small bits, everything works, but we can’t yet put everything together, into the big picture.”
