London Olympic champions Andy Murray and Serena Williams beat their opponents in the third round of the U.S. Open.
Andy Murray, seeded third, stuttered past Spain’s Feliciano Lopez spending four hours and four sets on the court. The 25-year-old Scot had to survive three tie breaks to secure a 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 4-6,
In the fourth round, Murray will encounter Canada’s 15th seed Milos Raonic who eliminated James Blake of the United States 6-3, 6-0, 7-6(3).
Top-seeded Roger Federer had little trouble defeating Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, and will face 23rd seed Mardy Fish in round four.
The 30-year-old U.S. player dispatched 16th seed Gilles Simon of France 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, sixth seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic knocked out world No. 28 Sam Querrey of the United States (6)6-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, while eleventh seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain dumped another U.S. player, Jack Sock, 7-6(3), (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 6-1.
Three-time U.S. Open winner Serena Williams continued her confident start with an easy 6-4, 6-0 victory over Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and will play Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic in round four.
Hlavackova, ranked 82 in the world, sprang the biggest surprise of the day by stunning 14th seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
World No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska broke another barrier on the way to her first Grand Slam triumph finishing off 30th seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-3, 7-5 and will face Italy’s Roberta Vinci, seeded 20.
The 29-year-old Vinci blew away 13th seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 7-5.
Elsewhere, last year's U.S. open semifinalist Angelique Kerber of Germany demolished Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-1,6-2 to book an encounter with 10th seed Sara Errani of Italy, who breezed past Russian qualifier Olga Puchkova 6-1, 6-1.
