Finland became the first and last country to win bronze in the Elliot class sailing Saturday, beating Russia in a close final.

The Finnish crew of Silja Lehtinen, Silja Kanerva and Mikaela Wulff beat Russia 3-1 to third place in the match race event, a one-on-one competition between two boats that prizes tactical sailing above outright speed.

The turning point in the bronze medal match came in the third race when, with the scores poised at 1-1, Finland overtook Russia on the final stretch after the Russians had led round the first two marks.

Russia’s Ekaterina Skudina, Elena Siuzeva and Elena Oblova had earlier pulled off a surprise victory over Britain in the quarterfinals.

Australia and Spain will compete in the final later Saturday.

The Elliott class, the only match racing in Olympic sailing, was introduced for the London Olympics but will be replaced by 49er FX skiff racing in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
