Kimberly Rhode of the United States confirmed her status as the gold medal favorite in the women’s skeet Saturday by breaking the Olympic record in qualifying.

Rhode shot 74, one shy of the world record and perfect score she set in March, and four clear of second-placed Danka Bartekova of Slovakia, with Russia’s Marina Belikova third on 69.

The other three shooters to qualify for the six-woman final were China’s Wei Ning, Germany’s Christine Wenzel and Italy’s Chiara Cainero, who won her place in a shoot-off with Sweden’s Threse Lundqvist after they finished equal on 67.

Cainero had held the Olympic record with a score of 72 in Beijing in 2008.
