Rubin Kazan president Dmitry Samarenkin stepped down from the post Tuesday, a regional sports official announced.

Samarenkin took over from Alexander Gusev in August, but was unable to prevent a disappointing sixth-placed finish this season.

He is to be replaced by the general director of the Kazan government-controlled firm Svyazinvestneftkhim, Valery Sorokin, said local sports minister Rafis Burganov.

Rubin did finish with some silverware, however, after beating Dynamo Moscow 1-0 in the Russian Cup final, giving them a place in the group stage of next year's Europa League.

Expectations of success are high in Kazan, where Rubin won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009, coming third in 2010.
