International media must provide balanced coverage of the internal armed conflict in Ukraine, a spokesman for International Press Institute (IPI) told Sputnik Tuesday.

Most Europeans Mistrust Mainstream Media Biased Coverage of Ukraine Crisis
MOSCOW (Sputnik), Yulia Shamporova The IPI statement is a response to poll results from ICM Research made exclusively for Sputnik News Agency. About 54 percent of those surveyed in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Greece said they had little trust in mainstream mass media when it came to covering the Ukrainian crisis “accurately and fairly.”

“We are aware that there is a lot of dissatisfaction in the way that the Ukrainian conflict is being covered, and from the IPI perspective what is needed is media being as independent as possible covering the conflict from both sides,” the media watchdog's representative said.

He added that the organization is constantly urging media representatives to deliver credible information to both the Ukrainian and Russian public as well as to the rest of Europe.

Clashes between government forces and pro-independence militias in Ukraine have killed over 6,000 people in the past 12 months, according to UN figures. Kiev and its Western allies have blamed the escalation of hostilities on Russia’s alleged backing of anti-government forces. Moscow has firmly denied sending troops and other military aid to Ukraine.
