A high-speed FASTER undersea Internet cable that connects the United States and Japan becomes operational on Thursday, Tokyo's NEC Corporation that was constructing the cable said in a statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In August 2014, FASTER, a consortium of companies, comprising China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, Google, KDDI and Singtel companies, which have developed the project, announced the creation of the six-fiber pair cable under the Pacific Ocean.

"FASTER, a consortium of six international companies, together with its supplier NEC Corporation, today announced that construction and end-to-end testing of a new trans-Pacific submarine cable system, the 'FASTER Cable System,' has been successfully completed and will start service on June 30, 2016," the statement published on Wednesday said.

The 5.600-mile cable that connects the western US state of Oregon, where one of the largest Google's data centers is situated, with eastern Japanese prefectures of Chiba and Mie is able to deliver 60 Terabits per second of bandwidth, NEC specified.

The new cable will also allow extending its capacity beyond Japan to other countries in Asia due to its connectivity to many cable systems in the region, the statement added.
