A group of Russian scientists, aided by their colleagues from Germany and France, have discovered an ocean-sized body of water that was formed during the Archaean geologic eon, at least 2.5 million years ago, and is concealed hundreds of miles deep in our planet’s crust.
This vast reservoir is located many kilometers within the Earth’s crust and was formed under considerable pressure and temperatures up to 1,530 degrees Celsius, with its water being locked in crystalline mineral structures.
The scientists came to these conclusions after studying mineral samples – namely komatiites – discovered in Canada, and published their findings in the Nature scientific journal.
